Standing on the 10,000 year old Athabasca Glacier was a pretty unique way to spend my 33rd birthday.

It was a beautifully sunny, cold day as we made our way through the moraines, ice and snow to the iconic glacier. It is visible from the Icefields Parkway and you can hike up to the tongue of the glacier, but we were going on a special tour that would allow us to step foot on that ancient ice.

It’s such a surreal feeling standing on something that old, so much of it is untouched and you really have to hold yourself back from going for a look. Surrounded by huge mountains, I have never felt so small and insignificant. I would highly recommend a tour, heading off to explore alone leaves you open to danger as the glacier is littered with deep crevasses.

The glacier is sadly receding at a rapid rate each year which is absolutely devastating but for that one brief moment we were stood on a little piece of history, what a way to spend a birthday.
