Postcards from Canada: Peyto Lake

Another of Banffs must have lakes is the gloriously blue, Peyto Lake, this lake is easily accessible from the Icefields Parkway and named after a local guide, Bill Peyto.

If you thought Moraine was spectacular, you are in for a treat with this lake, it is stunningly blue and doesn’t look real at all. With the gorgeous Waputik Mountain Range surrounding it, this lakes sits between Caldron Peak, Peyto Lake and Mount Jimmy Simpson. There is also a very dense forest around one side, which makes the perfect place for bears.

Like most of the lakes in this area, it is glacial fed, giving it the most amazing colour. We visited on our last day in Banff and it was manic! With this lake being so easily accessible it does make it one of the busiest we visited, after a very short hike, you arrive at a viewing platform, which means it is a lake for anyone.

I would recommend an early or lake visit to avoid the crowds, as you cannot get down to the lakeshore and cannot canoe, which makes it feel a bit more wild. Despite the crowds, it really is a must have, it is absolutely beautiful.
