Moody Morning in Glen More

The peaty, smoky dram warmed me as I watched the thick cloud create a complete whiteout. It had been a day of white sandy beaches and moody mountains here on the Isle of the Mull. Eventually the rain and wind had taken a hold and we had battened down the hatches for a cosy evening indoors. I could no longer see Loch Scridain or the towering mountains which guarded it.

Earlier in the day, we had packed up the car with dog, baby and coffee before driving around Loch Scridain to Glen More in search of Golden Eagles. Glen More is a beautiful, atmospheric valley, which is home to the three lochs and many impressive mountains, including the islands only munro, Ben More. There is also an abundance of wildlife including short ear owls, golden eagles, red deer and adders.

The eagles however, stayed elusive that day but we were lucky enough to spot an adder.

While Sam stayed on eagle watch, I took my camera and went to soak up the mountain views. It had been far too long since we had seen any big hills. The light was beautiful casting a golden glow over some of them, whilst others remained in the thick cloud. I’ve aways been fascinated by the micro climates that come with mountains and the stories they could tell, so I was in my element snapping away with my camera, as the cloud scuddered across the tops.

With the atmospheric views before me, I couldn’t help but think back to the stories of the headless horseman I had heard so much about, you could definitely imagine a ghostly apparition in that moody landscape. There was however, no ghost, just us.

The intoxicating smell of damp earth and heather filled my nostrils and for the first time in months, I felt as if I could breathe, life with a baby can be manic a times. The dramatic landscape in front of me was awe inspiring and I felt alive and excited for the adventures we had yet to go on. Mountains do that, they inspire and terrify in equal measure and that is why I am constantly drawn to them.

Even though Flo won’t remember these mountains, I hope she grows up with a love for them, just like her mum.
